The number of Websites and communities that pay you to write is rapidly proliferating, and while none of them will make you rich, you have no overhead. Gather pays you points that you can redeem for merchandise and cash. Sites like WritingUp, Senserely, Squidoo and Hubpages are setup so that you can place Google Adsense ads and other affiliate material on your entries (you can see my Squidoo Lens here).

Then there's this content site - click here. It usually pays $10 to $100 or more for an article.
If you write local news, you might be interested in the Blogger News Network (BNN). The owner says that the site is growing, but at this time, the pay is poor.
Elance.com has been around since 1999 and boasts that it serves up 100,000+ well-paying projects from its clients to its writers, but the writers have to pay monthly fees in order to bid on all those paid gigs.
