Hackers Using Free Hosts to Invade Your Home
According to recent news, hackers are invading your home computers from accounts they registered with free web-hosting services. And believe me, the moderators of forums such as those hosted on freewebspace.net are too immature and unimaginative to offer real support or protection (they wrap themselves up in trivial matters and, as suspects, unjustly judge so-called (or alleged) behavioral infractions). But let me tell you, a good many fly-by-night free web hosts advertise with the likes of www.freewebspace.net forums.
Quoting www.techtree.com:
Websense Security LabsT finds thousands of cases of hackers creating web hosting accounts to steal private data and spread malicious code and spyware.
Websense announced, that free personal web hosting sites are increasingly being exploited by hackers, seeking affordable and anonymous ways to store and disseminate mobile malicious code (MMC) and dangerous types of spyware i.e. keyloggers which is designed to steal personal and confidential information.
Update, one year later, Sept. 2006: From McAfee Security
Whilst investigating how spammers are abusing free web site hosting providers, McAfee Avert Labs has discovered that very few spammers have the technology or resources to abuse the free web hosting providers in an automated or bulk manner. This leads to a vertical marketplace where a spammer (with the necessary skills) can sell this alternate form of web site hosting to other spammers. These “link providers” create and maintain thousands of free hosting accounts on behalf of the spammers, which are then used to redirect to spam web sites. The providers can update the redirects, so that when the final spam web pages are taken down by ISPs, web hosts, or domain resellers, the redirects can be updated to link to another live spam web site.Tweet This: Send Page to Twitter
